Got a stupid work related call about the time I got to her, had to turn around and go back to work for an hour. Do customers not understand the importance of my hobby? Geez....

Not much to report today, only had an hour to spend on it.

What? You mean you don't have intake covers? Some days it pays to have a laser :) No dirt getting in here while handling it!

Got the valves all checked. They looked really good. They were :

Intake 1 : .006" and .006" Exhaust 1 : .008"/.008"
Intake 2 : .007" and .007" Exhaust 2 : .009"/.009"
Intake 3 : .007" and .006" Exhaust 3 : .009"/.009"
Intake 4 : .007" and .007" Exhaust 4 : .009"/.008"

It's about ready to pull apart now. Just a few small things to take loose.

My studying for the night is the timing issues. I haven't wrapped my head around how to make sure the crank and cams are timed together properly once the case is split. I know it's in the manual, so that's what's keeping me up late tonight. If anyone has a cliff notes versions, I'd like to hear it. Not that I'm using that instead of the manual, but I'm trying to gain as much knowledge as possible since that's an area that allows no mistakes so if anyone has any additional guidance on that, it would be greatly appreciated.

On schedule for engine removal on Saturday morning.

I have no advice but I will give encouragement. I think it is outstanding that you are doing this for this bike instead of just letting it die.

I never did really understand that song Jolene. My imagination cannot show me a woman attractive enough to steal a man from the Uber Hottie that Dolly Parton was at the time she sang that song. Jolene must have been an amazing creature.

Piece of cake on the timing marks, don't sweat it. Pitchers in the book. Not sure you have to disassemble cam timing, think not. Top end should not need disassembly. Get that valve cover back on there.

Valve cover is on! Not anticipating taking the top end apart, just trying to understand how taking the timing chain off works and what I need to make sure I don’t do wrong. Reading the manual now.

Ray, I’m not seeing anything on “timing chain removal”, they list it all as part of removing the cams. I had hoped to find a section on simply replacing the timing chain but either it’s not here or I’m missing it.

Any suggestions on that? Or how I should move forward?

Thanks for the compliment! I actually measured the water pipe holes to do just that, but didn't get around to it. Maybe today ;) But the engine is about to be upside down so I'm not sure they'll help in the short term.

Yeah - those covers are really cool!

(RAY - CHECK ME OUT ON THIS, BUT I THINK I'VE GOT IT RIGHT)

Did you zip tie (in 2-3 places each) the cam chain to each cam gear? Also, I'd rotate the motor until you are at TDC for the crankshaft, and the timing marks (arrows pointing to the outside for each cam) are level with the top of the cylinder head.

You can check this timing by getting a good LED flashlight and peeking on the outside of the cam gears. The intake side will be easy to spot, and the flashlight (with a small dental mirror if necessary) will help with the exhaust side. One trick I learned on this was to rotate the motor and when each timing mark for the cam gears appears, take some liquid paper and color the arrow with two or three layers. Right before it dries, wipe the excess off and what is left is a sharp WHITE arrow that you can find easily with the flashlight.

Then put the valve cover on.

Then loosen the cam chain tensioner.

Then remove the crank timing chain gear to separate the chain from the crank.

Then flip the motor and start splitting the case.

That liquid paper idea is great Pants! May consider using that "glow in the dark" type paint that some gun owners use to brighten up their sights with as an alternative if you can get some.

One would remove lower crankshaft pickup rotor, remove pin from rear cam chain guide, remove camshafts, remove chain guides, either drop the chain down towards the crank or "unhook" it off the crankshaft and pull it out through the top. It's a job you'll likely never do.

Sometimes there is already white paint in one of the cam gear arrows, but yes, a little paint is certainly a good idea. Festus is lucky, engine is out so he can clearly see..... the arrows on cam gears align with top edge of cylinder head with the lower crankshaft timing mark aligned... as shown in the FSM. If no cam removal is needed or no CCT change, no zip ties needed.

Remove camshafts? Really? I have to remove the cams? I didn't think that was necessary.

Hey, You asked, I didn't say you had to do it...... you're not removing anything, unless you change valve shims or change the CCT.But if replacing the chain, remember they are stiff (sideways). You may get the old one off but not likely the new one on... besides, how you gonna get the chain guides in and out?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I visited Jolene yesterday and am happy to report that she is in good hands. Festus is one determined dude, or at least he's not afraid to undo a bolt. Any bolt. Like ALL of them. It was a little difficult to see her in this condition, with her guts spilled around the room, but I'm confident she will be tearing around the backroads of Virginia very soon. Or at least by 2019. Maybe. If he can find all the parts.
